Starting a Small Business

Starting a small business is a universal dream... almost as important as owning your own home.

If you're tired of punching a clock and working hard to make someone else rich, more than likely you've thought about having your own business.

Or, maybe you just want to make some extra money. After all, everything seems to cost more and trying to make ends meet gets tougher each day.

Whatever reason you have for starting a small business, one thing is for sure. There is a certain freedom with entrepreneurship that's not available when you work for someone else.

And, there's a different type of motivation. Working hard for yourself beats doing it for someone else every time.

But keep in mind that being in business for yourself requires a new type of responsibility.  There's no boss to call for help, so now you have to solve the problems.

Once the initial excitement of starting a small business begins to wane, you will be confronted with what hard work really means.  Success or failure begins and ends with you.

If you anticipate this before you begin, then you will have a much easier time confronting these problems when they do appear.

Financial stability can be difficult in the early days of starting a small business. Unless you are lucky, money will come in fits and starts, so it's helpful to have another source of income. This might be from a savings account, another job or a family member.

Most small business owners work long hours. Vacation time and even days off might be next to impossible until your operation is stabile and making money.

Liability is an important factor to consider. Insurance is advised in almost all cases, so be sure to speak with a professional. Your final decision will probably depend on the legal structure of your small business.

Despite the hardship, there are many advantages to owning and operating a small business:

  • You get to call the shots.
  • You have the potential to make unlimited money.
  • You have more opportunity to spend time with loved ones.
  • You can create retirement and medical plans for yourself.
  • You can diversify multiple types of small businesses.
  • You can get tax breaks by working from your home.

It's important when starting a business to have your eyes wide open. Keep in mind that a large percentage of new small businesses fail during the first two years.  So, give some thought to what you would do if that happens.

Also, spend a fair amount of time thinking about your choice of business entity because it will have a direct bearing on how you report your taxes.

For instance, if your operation is limited to sales from home (e.g. on the web or network marketing) you may find it best to operate as a sole proprietor.

On the other hand, if you venture into a realm of activity that could place you and your family in legal tangles (e.g. professional consultancy or medical information) you may need to consider the liability protection provided by different corporate entities.

There are many resources available for you - it just depends on the extent of your vision.
